Guitar Chords for Writing Songs

Here are some great guitar chords for writing songs. For a further exploration of the E form check out the E form lesson.

e form chords

Very resonant sounds

This type of voicing can light up based on where you locate it. We have chosen positions (fret numbers) where we hear sweet resonance. It is common for song sections to be written in 4 chord phrases (think of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana or When I Come Around by Green Day).

Be sure to write your own chord progression using these guitar chords for songwriting.

You can also alternate between leaving the 2 and 1 strings open versus muting (or even fretting/barring). You can create a 'dialog' or 'changing element' on a given chord by alternating between opens & mutes (and again even barring).
