Pivot Exercise, Outside & Inside Picking

Custom Search

Guitar Exercises are a sure way to grow as guitarist and musician. Physical exercises offer a way to focus your efforts and ensure improvement. They provide time to study how your fretting hand works & how to correctly use your pick.

Keep in mind that a pick has 2 sides, but 4 edges. When we pick, you can get great tone from using edges rather than sides. Experiment with different pick angles.

The edges: thumbside LEFT & RIGHT, index side LEFT & RIGHT. If you tilt your pick slightly to one side or the other, you'll get access to the edges.

In the following exercise, we will work will picking on the OUTSIDE & INSIDE of string couplets(set of 2 strings).

Here is the tab for the exercise. The arrows at the end of a segment means to continue the same sequence on all sets of string couplets (complete the sequence).

There are an infinite amount of exercises that you can play. The idea is to find ones that challenge your weak areas, or design your own.

When you design your own guitar exercises, this concentrates your technique focused practice on your particular weaknesses.

It's a good thing to do: be able to create exercises for yourself, & if you teach, this is or will be a most valuable skill to include in your skill arsenal.
